The Government is Open for Business and wants to work with more small and medium businesses across the UK.

By 2020, the government plans to spend £1 in every £3 with small business in the UK, either directly or through the supply chain. That’s almost £3 billion of new business up for grabs every year, either directly or through the supply chain.

Increasing the proportion of government spend that reaches SMEs has been a key priority within the governments procurement policy over the past 5 years. In August 2015 the government announced an aspiration for 33% of commercial spending to go to SMEs by 2020.

The Open for Business campaign has been set up to increase the number of SMEs bidding for government contracts. The campaign also aims to increase government buyer confidence in procuring with SMEs

Becoming a government supplier is a great way to make a difference to your business. Companies report an increase in their turnover, higher profits and an expansion of their workforce.Small businesses can grow by becoming a government supplier, but don’t just take our word for it, hear from some companies who already work with the government.

The Government are making improvements to make it easier for small businesses to supply to government. This includes making the application process quicker and easier and a 30 day payment promise for all valid invoices.

They are continually listening to what SMEs have to say and welcome their feedback on how we can do better. There’s lots of additional help and support available too, through our guides, webinars, case studies and blogs all aimed at providing top tips and inspiring small businesses to bid for and win government contracts.
