Passport services for disabled customers

There are free services and facilities to help you with your passport application if you’re disabled.

    Wheelchair access

All Passport Customer Service Centres have wheelchair access. Some have toilets for disabled customers as well – in those that don’t, staff will be able to take you to an appropriate toilet in the building.

    Problems signing the application form

You can get someone to sign the form on your behalf (eg a relative, social services officer or doctor) if your disability means you can’t sign the form yourself (eg you can’t write, have learning or writing difficulties).

They should sign the declaration and provide an explanation of why you can’t sign in both:

    • section 8 of the form, or the additional information box if you apply online
    • a dated covering letter (which they must also sign)

The wording “The holder is not required to sign” will be shown in the passport where the signature would normally be.

Call the Passport Adviceline if you need more help or advice.

If you’re applying for a child aged 12 to 15 who can’t sign section 6 of the form themselves:

    • leave this section blank
    • explain in section 8 of the form, or the additional information box if you apply online, that the child is unable to sign

Her Majesty’s Passport Office will endorse the passport to say the holder’s signature isn’t needed.

    Problems with passport photos

Contact the Passport Adviceline if your disability means you can’t meet the passport photo requirements.

If you’re deaf or hard of hearing

    Passport Customer Service Centres have:

    • staff trained in sign language – they can help you fill in your application form
    • induction loops and quiet rooms with no background noise

Book an appointment to visit a Customer Service Centre if you’d like someone to help with your application. You can do this by calling the Passport Adviceline.

If you’re blind or partially sighted

The guidance booklet to help with your passport application is available in different formats. Call the Passport Adviceline if you’d like it in:

    • Braille
    • audio tape
    • large-print format

    Applying by phone

Call 0800 138 8808 to apply by phone. Someone will fill the form in for you using the information you provide. They’ll then post it to you to check, sign and return with the relevant documents, payment and photos.

    Braille passport stickers

Her Majesty’s Passport Office can attach a Braille identifying sticker to your new passport. You ask for this on your application form.

Contact your nearest Passport Customer Service Centre to get a sticker for your current passport.
