1. How to apply
Students from England
Most full-time and part-time students can apply online to Student Finance England.
Set up a student finance online account.
Log in and complete the online application.
If needed, include details of your household income and get your parents (or partner) to support your application.
If needed, send in proof of identity.
Usually, within 6 weeks you'll get a loan declaration in the post - sign and return it.
If you can't apply online, use the form finder to get the forms you need.
Continuing students
If you’re a continuing student (that is, you got finance last year), log in to your student finance account and apply online.
There’s a different process if you became a part-time student before 1 September 2012.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
There’s a different process for students from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
EU students
Download an application pack - use the form finder to get the forms you need.
If needed, send in proof of identity.
Usually within 6 weeks you'll get a letter confirming how much you'll get.
You’ll be sent the application forms if you’re a continuing student (you got finance last year).
2. When to apply
You don't need a confirmed place at a university or college to apply.
The rules are different if you became a student before 1 September 2012. You'll get a letter telling you when you can apply.
Students from England
Courses for the 2014 to 2015 academic year start from 1 September 2014.

3. Proof of identity
Students from England
Include your valid UK passport details in your application the first time you apply.
Don't send your UK passport.
If you don't have a UK passport (or it has expired), send your original birth or adoption certificate using the certificate form.

4. Parent or partner support
If you’re the parent or partner of a student you’ll usually support a student finance application if the student is applying for finance based on their household income.
How to support an application
You'll be sent an email with your log-in details after the student has applied. Use your log-in details to complete your part of the application.
Download form PFF2 if you can't do it online.If you expect your income to drop by 15% or more, send Student Finance England a current year income assessment form.
Student Finance England may ask for more details and evidence of your income or circumstances.
Evidence to support an application
You may be asked to send evidence of income and circumstances. Examples of the evidence you can use are listed below. You must only send photocopies - they won’t be returned.

5. Household income
Your household income is made up of your income plus that of the people who live with you, for example:
- your parents
- your parent and their partner
- your partner
You must provide details of your household income if you apply for any of the following:
- full Maintenance Loan
- Maintenance Grant
- Special Support Grant
- Childcare Grant
- Adult Dependants' Grant
Income details should be sent online. If you can't do it online, use form PFF2.
What income is assessed
Your parents’ income is assessed if you’re under 25 and depend on them financially. Your partner’s income is assessed if you’re over 25 and living with them.
Earned and unearned income (eg benefits, pension or investments) for a certain tax year will be assessed. The tax year chosen will depend on the academic year you’re applying for.

Change the tax year that’s assessed
If your household income is expected to drop by 15% or more, you can ask for income details for the current tax year to be assessed instead. To do this, send a ‘CYI - current tax year income form’.

6. Change an application
Students from England
Use your online account to change your personal details - eg bank or contact details.
You must contact Student Finance England by phone if:
- your household income changes
- your name changes
- your marital status changes
- your parents have more children
Change your course or university
If you’re a full-time student you can tell Student Finance England that you’ve changed your course or university using the ‘Change of circumstances form.’

You’ll need to contact Student Finance England by phone if you’re a part-time student.
After your course starts you can contact your university or ?college to change your course or your Tuition Fee Loan.
EU students
Update your personal details and Tuition Fee Loan amounts using form EUCO1 if you’re a full-time EU student.
You’ll need to contact the Student Finance Services Non UK Team if you’re a part-time EU student.
