Horizontal Innovation™ is the effective transfer and application of pre-existing technologies and knowledge from one industrial sector, to help meet a challenge or challenges, in another.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC) cordially invite UK micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to submit ideas for such Horizontal Innovation™.
Applications are invited in seven sectors with up to £50,000 worth of research and development support from the HVMC for the selected bid in each sector – total funding in kind of £350,000 to accelerate innovation.

UK Export Finance (UKEF), the UK’s export credit agency, will help many more businesses, both exporters and supply chain SMEs, access financial support through their banks.
Secretary of State for the Department for International Trade, Liam Fox, has announced that UKEF will partner with five of the UK’s biggest banks to deliver government-backed financial support to exporters more quickly and efficiently.

Crown Commercial Service is making it easier than ever for companies to supply to government by launching a new, simplified tender pack.
CCS has been working with partners including the CBI, Federation of Small Businesses, techUK and the Association of Bid Managers to design the new pack, which cuts the amount of tender documentation that suppliers need to complete.

More than 105,000 businesses helped through start-up fund
More than 105,000 businesses have been launched with the support from the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA), a fund available to jobseekers with a business idea.
Successful applicants get access to a business mentor, financial support for up to 6 months and may be able to apply for a loan of up to £25,000 to help with start-up costs.
The latest NEA figures show that the North West had the highest number of start-ups (16,090), followed by London (12,870) and Yorkshire and Humberside (11,590).

CMA helps microbusinesses combat energy overpricing
From today (26th June), measures introduced by the CMA could see microbusinesses make significant savings on their energy costs.
During its 2-year investigation into the energy market, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that about 45% of microbusinesses across Great Britain were stuck on their supplier’s expensive ‘default’ tariffs. The study concluded that it was difficult for owners to shop around and switch to cheaper deals, as energy price information was not easily available. Greenport Hull have a funded pathway to work scheme to help the longterm unemployed back into work. This is an opportuity for businesses to help people back into work at no cost to them. In return for offering a work placment they will get a motivated individual.

Goldman Sachs are now accepting applications for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme which will commence in Jamuary 2018.
